When people think of a sprain, the ankle is often injured, but the thumb can also be injured. This risk is greater if you regularly practice a sport that puts pressure on the hands and fingers. Sports that place strain on the fingers include basketball, tennis, volleyball and skiing. A sprained thumb can be easily treated by applying a pressure bandage to the thumb. A thumb sprain can be recognized by sharp pain, bruising on the thumb and swelling. By applying a pressure bandage around the thumb, the thumb will be stabilized and the transport of lymphatic fluid will be stimulated. This fluid plays an important role in repairing damaged tissue and removes waste from tissue and cells.
