View full detailsWhat are alginates?
Alginate is an organic compound extracted from kelp. Kelp is a brownish seaweed found in colder coastal waters. Algin is the active ingredient in alginates and is capable of absorbing 200 to 300 times its own weight in moisture. This makes alginates extremely suitable for use in the care of wounds that ooze fluid. Another advantage of an alginate is that it forms a firm gel-like substance when the compound comes into contact with wound fluid. This creates a moist environment that is favorable for the healing of a wound. Alginate in wound care products ensures that micro-organisms and dead tissue remains are absorbed.
